What Is a RAMS Document?

A RAMS document stands for Risk Assessment and Method Statement. It combines two important construction documents into one: a Risk Assessment, which identifies potential hazards, and a Method Statement, which explains how the work will be carried out safely.

RAMS documents are widely used on commercial construction projects, public sector works, schools, hospitals, and other sites where contractors must demonstrate that work has been properly planned before it begins.

For a typical domestic resin driveway installation, a RAMS document is not usually required. However, it is commonly requested for larger or commercial projects.

What Does a RAMS Document Include?

A RAMS document is designed to explain both the risks involved and the measures taken to control them. It typically includes:

  • A description of the work being carried out.
  • Site-specific hazards and identified risks.
  • Control measures to reduce those risks.
  • The sequence of installation.
  • Equipment and machinery being used.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
  • Emergency procedures.
  • Environmental and waste management measures.

Together, these documents help ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with site requirements.

Why Is a RAMS Document Important?

A RAMS document helps protect everyone involved in a construction project. It allows contractors, site managers, and clients to understand the risks before work begins and confirms that appropriate safety procedures are in place.

On commercial projects, providing RAMS documents is often a contractual or legal requirement before access to site is granted.

Even on smaller residential projects where formal RAMS documentation is not required, following the same planning principles helps reduce mistakes, improve safety, and deliver a better-quality installation.
