Resin driveway cracks are usually caused by movement or failure in the base beneath the surface rather than the resin layer itself. While resin bound surfaces are flexible and crack resistant under normal conditions, they still depend on a stable foundation to perform properly.
If the base shifts, settles, or expands, that movement can eventually transfer to the resin surface above. In most cases, cracks are a sign that something underneath the driveway was not properly prepared, repaired, or designed for the conditions on site.
This is why groundwork is one of the most important parts of any resin driveway installation.
The most common causes of cracking
The most common cause of cracking is a weak or unstable base. If the sub-base has not been compacted correctly, or if the concrete or tarmac beneath the resin is already damaged, the surface may begin to move over time.
Other causes can include poor drainage, water getting trapped within the structure, heavy loads beyond what the driveway was designed to handle, or old cracks in the existing base reflecting through the new surface.
On concrete bases, failure to continue existing expansion joints through the resin layer can also lead to cracking as the concrete expands and contracts.
Why the surface alone is rarely the problem
Polyurethane resin has some natural flexibility, which helps the surface cope with small levels of movement. This means the resin layer itself is rarely the main cause of cracking unless it has been mixed or installed incorrectly.
In most situations, the visible crack is only the symptom. The underlying issue is usually structural and starts below the surface.
That is why simply patching the resin without addressing the base may not solve the problem in the long term.
How we help prevent cracks
ResinDriveway.ie helps prevent cracking by assessing the base properly before installation begins. We do not treat resin as a cover-up for poor groundwork. If the existing surface is unstable, cracked, or holding water, we address that first.
Our process focuses on correct excavation, drainage, and base preparation so the resin surface has the support it needs to perform well over time.
