What Is a SuDS Approval (Local Authority)?

SuDS approval refers to the process of ensuring that a drainage system complies with Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) principles and any requirements set by the relevant local authority. SuDS are designed to manage rainwater naturally by allowing it to soak into the ground, reducing surface water runoff and lowering the risk of flooding.

For residential resin driveway projects in Ireland, a separate “SuDS approval” is not usually required simply because you are replacing an existing driveway. However, planning permission or drainage requirements may apply for larger developments, commercial projects, or where local authority conditions are involved.

Because every project is different, it’s always worth checking with your local authority if you’re unsure about the requirements.

Why Are SuDS Important?

Traditional impermeable driveways cause rainwater to run off into drains and sewers, which can contribute to localised flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.

A properly installed resin bound driveway is permeable, allowing water to drain through the surface and into the ground below when constructed over a suitable permeable base. This supports the principles of SuDS by:

  • Reducing surface water runoff.
  • Helping prevent puddles and standing water.
  • Lowering pressure on public drainage systems.
  • Supporting more sustainable rainwater management.

These benefits make resin bound surfacing a popular choice for modern homes across Ireland.

When Might Local Authority Approval Be Needed?

Most domestic driveway replacements do not require a separate SuDS approval. However, additional approvals or planning requirements may apply where a project involves:

  • New property developments.
  • Commercial or public spaces.
  • Significant changes to existing drainage systems.
  • Works carried out as part of a planning permission condition.

If your project forms part of a larger development, your designer, engineer, or contractor can advise on any local authority requirements before work begins.

How Resin Driveway Ireland Designs Permeable Driveways

At Resin Driveway Ireland, we install resin bound driveways that are designed to support effective drainage and comply with recognised industry best practices. Where appropriate, we construct the driveway over a permeable base so rainwater can naturally drain through the surface rather than flowing into nearby drains.

During our site visit, we assess your property’s existing drainage, ground conditions, and layout to recommend the most suitable installation method. If your project has specific planning or drainage requirements, we’ll discuss these with you before work begins.
