What is a sub-base in driveway construction?

A sub-base is the structural foundation layer installed beneath the visible surface of a driveway. It sits between the natural ground (subgrade) and the final surfacing material, providing stability, load distribution, and drainage support.

In resin bound driveway systems, the sub-base plays a critical role in ensuring long-term durability. It creates a stable platform that prevents movement, sinking, or cracking in the finished surface.

Without a properly constructed sub-base, even high-quality surfacing materials can fail prematurely.

What materials are used for sub-bases

Sub-bases are typically constructed using compacted crushed stone materials designed to create a strong yet permeable foundation. The most common materials include MOT Type 3 stone, open-grade aggregates, and other permeable sub-base materials.

These materials are laid in layers and compacted using specialist equipment to create a stable base that can support vehicle loads. The structure must also allow water to drain effectively, especially for permeable driveway systems like resin bound surfaces.

The depth and composition of the sub-base depend on soil conditions, expected traffic load, and drainage requirements.

Why sub-base preparation is critical

The sub-base distributes the weight of vehicles across a larger area, preventing pressure from concentrating on the surface layer. This helps reduce the risk of cracking, rutting, or sinking over time.

It also plays a major role in water management. A properly installed sub-base allows rainwater to disperse gradually into the ground instead of collecting beneath the surface.

Poor sub-base preparation is one of the most common causes of driveway failure. If the base is unstable, uneven, or poorly compacted, the surface above it will eventually show signs of movement or damage.

How we build proper sub-bases

Resin Driveway Ireland prepares sub-bases using carefully selected aggregates and professional compaction techniques. Before installation begins, we assess the ground conditions to determine the correct base depth and materials required.

Our groundwork process focuses on creating a stable, well-draining foundation that supports the resin surface above it. By investing time in proper base preparation, we ensure the driveway performs reliably for many years.
