What is an open-grade asphalt base?

An open-grade asphalt base is a permeable asphalt layer used as a foundation for certain driveway surfaces, including resin bound systems. Unlike traditional asphalt, it contains fewer fine particles, which allows water to drain through the structure instead of running off the surface.

This type of base is designed to provide both structural support and drainage capability. When used beneath resin bound driveways, it helps maintain the permeability of the entire system.

Because of its strength and drainage performance, open-grade asphalt is one of the most common foundations used for modern resin driveway installations.

What makes asphalt “Open-Grade”

Open-grade asphalt differs from traditional dense asphalt because of its aggregate structure. The mixture contains larger aggregate particles and fewer fine materials, creating small gaps within the surface layer.

These voids allow rainwater to pass through the asphalt and into the sub-base below. The result is a surface that remains structurally strong while supporting permeable drainage systems.

The material is typically installed at a specific thickness to ensure it can support vehicle loads while maintaining its drainage capability.

Why open-grade asphalt is used for resin driveways

Resin bound driveways rely on a permeable base to function properly. Open-grade asphalt provides an ideal foundation because it supports both load-bearing performance and water infiltration.

When rainwater passes through the resin surface, it continues flowing through the asphalt layer and into the permeable sub-base below. This prevents water from becoming trapped within the driveway structure.

A well-installed asphalt base also creates a smooth and stable platform for the resin surface, improving the overall appearance and durability of the finished driveway.

How we install open-grade bases

Resin Driveway Ireland installs resin bound driveways over carefully prepared open-grade asphalt bases where permeability is required. We assess the existing ground conditions and install the correct base thickness to ensure long-term stability.

Our installation process focuses on proper drainage design, structural preparation, and surface compatibility. By combining a permeable base with professional resin application, we ensure the driveway performs reliably in Irish weather conditions.
