What Is a SuDS-Compliant driveway?

A SuDS-compliant driveway meets Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) standards by allowing rainwater to drain naturally into the ground rather than directing it into public surface water drains. The goal of SuDS is to reduce pressure on drainage networks and minimise the risk of localised flooding.

Resin bound driveways can meet these standards when installed over a properly constructed permeable base. The surface itself allows water to pass through, while the underlying layers manage infiltration and gradual dispersal into the soil.

A driveway is not automatically SuDS-compliant simply because it uses resin. Compliance depends on how the entire system is designed and installed.

Why SuDS compliance matters

SuDS compliance reduces flood risk by preventing excess runoff from entering already strained drainage systems. During heavy rainfall, impermeable driveways can cause water to flow directly into roads and drains, increasing the likelihood of surface water flooding.

By contrast, a permeable driveway absorbs rainfall at source. This supports environmental planning regulations and sustainable building practices. In many residential cases, installing a permeable driveway may remove the need for additional drainage channels or complex runoff management solutions.

For homeowners, this means a more environmentally responsible surface and fewer long-term drainage concerns.

How compliance is achieved

Compliance depends on both the surface layer and the base construction. While resin bound surfacing is permeable by design, it must be installed over a permeable sub-base to function correctly. Open-grade asphalt or properly prepared permeable stone foundations are typically used to maintain vertical water flow.

The driveway must also be designed with appropriate depth, compaction, and edge restraint. Incorrect base preparation, compacted soil, or poor drainage planning can compromise permeability and prevent the system from meeting SuDS requirements.

Attention to detail at ground preparation stage is essential to ensure the finished driveway performs as intended.

How ResinDriveway.ie installs to SuDS standards

ResinDriveway.ie prepares sub-bases and installs permeable resin systems that align with sustainable drainage principles. Before installation, we assess soil conditions, site levels, and expected water flow to determine the correct foundation structure.

Each project is evaluated individually to ensure correct drainage design and long-term performance. By combining proper groundwork with professional resin application, we deliver driveways that support natural water management while maintaining structural durability.
